The Witte Museum — Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery
One hundred years ago, American artists answered the country call by creating a national narrative of compelling artwork. Millions of patriotic posters were printed to communicate to a mass audience before every home had a radio or television. Your Country Calls: Art to Win World War I displays these dramatic images and bold graphics that called Americans to serve and contribute to the war effort through the power of the poster.
Your Country Calls is located in the Russell Hill Rogers Texas Art Gallery of the Robert J. and Helen C. Kleberg South Texas Heritage Center. The exhibit supports the national effort to commemorate the United States entry into the war in partnership with the Texas World War I Centennial Commission. The posters featured are from the Witte Museum Hertzberg Circus Collection. Texas State Senator Harry Hertzberg collection of the First World War Posters are closely related to his renowned circus collection, as many of the same printing companies and artists were involved in the production of posters for the circus and war effort. Come discover the images that were vital in defining public opinion about America entrance into the First World War. The posters display the emerging trends in art and graphic design at the turn of the century that strongly influenced more than 300 artists who created them. Your Country Calls: Art to Win World War I will run through January 7, 2018. Admission is included with museum admission.
Your Country Calls: Art to Win World War I is generously supported by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture.
